The history of the Earth goes back from the moment our planet was formed, when the Solar System was born, approximately for 4,6 billion years ago, and until today. The time frame in which our earth has existed, is divided into geological time periods, where the largest is an aeon. There are four aeons: Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic and Phanerozoic.
- Hadean or the pre-Archean began with the formation of the Earth about 4.6 billion years ago and ended, as defined by the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), 4 billion years ago.
- During the Archean, the Earth's crust had cooled enough to allow the formation of continents and life started to form.
- The Proterozoic, which is subdivided into three aeras: the Paleoproterozoic (2.5 to 1.6 billion years ago), Mesoproterozoic (1.6 to 1 billion years ago), and Neoproterozoic (1 billion to 542.0 million years ago).
- The Phanerozoic Eon is the current geologic eon in the geologic time scale, and the one during which abundant animal and plant life has existed. It covers 541 million years to the present, and began with the Cambrian Period when animals first developed hard shells preserved in the fossil record. Watch below the beauty of the ancient spiral shape! This is a true wonder in our remarkable world.
