Icke-skönlitterär roman - The Non-Fiction Novel

Icke-skönlitterär roman: Uttrycket myntades ursprungligen av Truman Capote för att beskriva hans bok In Cold Blood: A True account of a Multiple Murder and Its Concequences (1966). I hans spår kom senare Tom Wolfes Radical Chic och The Right Stuff och Norman Mailers Armies of the Night samt The Executioner´s song.

The Non-Fiction Novel: This term is originally coined by Truman Capote to describe his In Cold Blood: A True Account of a Multiple Murder and Its Consequences (1966). He wrote about a model midwestern family which was brutally murdered by a pair of rootless psychopats from America´s underclass. Capote investigated the family´s history and its social milieu, interviewed the criminals on Death Row and witnessed their eventual execution. Then he wrote an account of the crime, the narrative was in style and structure indistinguishable far from a novel.
It started a vogue for documentary narrative in recent times, high points of which have been books like Tom Wolfe´s Radical Chic and The Right Stuff, Norman Mailer´s Armies of The Night and The Executioner´s Song. In the non-fiction novel, new journalism, the novelistic techniques generate an excitement, intensity and emotive power that orthodox reporting or historiography do not aspire to be able to convey.
Thomas Keneally´s book, Schindler´s Ark, is also a very good example of that kind of writing. The book is based on the true and extraordinary story of a German businessman who used his position as an employer of forced labour in Nazi-occupied Poland to save the lives of many Jews.
