The end of the beginning is another difficult question to answer. Is it the first paragraph, the first few pages or the first chapter? However one defines it, the beginning of a novel is a threshold, separating the real world we inhabit from the world the novelist has imagined. If the author succeeds in his/hers attempt to draw us in, well, then the reader is hooked by the very first sentence.
A novel may begin with a set-piece description of a landscape or townscape. It can also begin in the middle of a conversation or a philosophical reflection.
