Jung claimed that all the essential typical characteristions that characterize us humans are with us from birth. These typically human attributes is what he called archetypes, which I mentioned in the previous post. As innate structures, they possess the ability to initiate, control and convey the typical behaviors and experiences that are common to all people everywhere. The archetypes give rise to similar thoughts, comceptions and emotions in people, regardless of class, belief, race, geographical position or historical epoch.
Jung had a special dram in the summer of 1909, when he was travelling with Freud to USA. He was invited to lecture by The Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. I will only mention his dream very briefly.
Jung dreamed he was on the upper floor in an old house, beautiful furniture and decorated walls. He was pleased with the house, and was glad he owned it. As he remembered that he didn't know how it looked downstairs, he decided to take the stairs and take a look. There the rooms were much older, medieval and rather dark. Jung looked at the floor, which were tiles of stone and in one of them was a ring. He pulled up the ring, and the tile of stone opened, which led him down to a pit. Then he woke up.
Jung told his dream to Freud, who only was interested in the identity of the skulls. Freud explained that Jung was carrying on a death wish towards the owners of the skulls. Jung had serious doubts, he understood what the dream house represented; it was in image of his Psyche. The upper floor was his concious personality, the ground floor represented his personal unconscious, and in the bottom he reached the collective unconscious. There Jung discovered the primitive man inside himself. The skulls were not death wishes, they belonged to our human ancestors who had formed the menthal inheritance which belongs to us all.

Freud's and Jung's differences came from their different backgrounds. Freud was a Jewish extrovert, who lived in a city with a mother who worshipped him. Jung was a Protestant, came from the country with a depressed and distant mother. Freud's dreams were fragmentic and unorganized, Jung's dreams were more like concrete symbolism and with a stronger narrative nature.
Jung discovered the similarity between dreams' natural and the Greek tragedy's formal structure. He divided them into four steps:
Jung discovered the similarity between dreams' natural and the Greek tragedy's formal structure. He divided them into four steps:
- 1.Exposure, which marks the place, and often the time for the event.
- 2.The development of the plot, when the situation becomes complicated and a tension appears, because of uncertainty what will happen.
- 3.Culmination, when something crucial happens or something completely changes.
- 4.Termination, the solution or the result of the dream work.
